(March 2011) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary recently signed an Agreement to reestablish a “sister institution” partnership with the Show Chwan Health Care System of Taiwan. The Show Chwan Health Care System, comprised of seven medical facilities, is one of the most highly respected and comprehensive medical care networks in Taiwan and an established premiere medical tourism destination.
D. McWilliams Kessler, NYEE Chief Executive Officer, participated via videoconference in the signing ceremony held at the Chang Bing Show Chwan Memorial Hospital in Lugang. He heralded this “new era of friendship and collaboration” as an opportunity to advance the two institutions’ shared missions of excellence in patient care and physician education.

Robert Rosenthal, MD, NYEE’s Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, accompanied by Richard Feiner, Associate Vice President for Development, signed the Agreement with Dr. Ming-Ho Huang, President and Founder of the Show Chwan Health Care System. The ceremony was attended by regional and provincial Taiwan government officials and received significant Taiwan media attention.
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary partnership with Show Chwan originally began in 1994 with a pioneering tele-ophthalmology program. This new agreement will include physician educational exchanges, observerships for visiting Show Chwan fellows, and opportunities for joint clinical subspecialty research in ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
