Since its founding in 1820, The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary mission has been for excellence in patient care for eye disease as well as education of eye care providers. To maintain excellence, research must be an integral part of this mission.
Researchers at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary were among the first to use the laser in treating retinal diseases. Today, the Department of Ophthalmology maintains a strong commitment to medical research, which contribute to advances in Ophthalmology and related areas of medicine.
Research of medical practitioners is facilitated by a staff of research scientists, neuro-ophthalmolgists, pathologists, and electrophysiologists, who likewise conduct independent research in their respective areas.
